Mele Ukulele invented the jumbo tenor in response to the demand from some of our customers.
They were professional musicians and wanted an instrument larger than a tenor but smaller than baritone uke. Some of them were playing baritones strung with tenor strings.
We designed an instrument which was longer than a tenor (29″ overall) but smaller than a baritone. In collaboration with D’Addario, we even came up with a special set of strings for it. The resulting instrument sounds much like a tenor but with a bit more “punch” and sustain. It’s great for guitar players and uke players with large hands.
Now, we’ve added the extended (“jumbo”) tenor to our lineup of “Custom deluxe” ukuleles, made entirely on Maui of the finest and most beautiful woods to be found. Response has been uniformly enthusiastic, and you’ll be seeing more of these in Hawaii’s hotels and luau shows and hearing them on records.
This is one of our deluxe custom line of ukuleles which are entirely made on Maui, and are among the best ukes in the world as far as fit, finish, tone.Try one! Model (#EXT1)
